More and more entrepreneurs are looking at The District of Columbia for the space and workforce needed to get their startups off the ground.  Tech giants like Living Social, founded in 2007 as Hungry Machine, saw the potential that DC offered and took advantage of it; five years later Living Social has 46 million members in 25 countries.

During that same time, DC was home to more mergers and acquisitions than Silicon Valley.

In fact, the DC version of Tech Meetup, a community tech conference held across major cities in the US, has already begun selling more tickets than its NYC counterpart, despite being around less than a year (the New York chapter started in 2004).

The reason behind this startup frenzy could be the political aura surrounding the district.  Many people come to DC to work with the Government or one if its contractors, and seeing a huge potential, try to start their own businesses to fill a niche.  Also, Obama is making DC a cool place to live and work again, and overall living conditions in DC are among the highest in the Nation (it was rated the number 1 Happiest large city in 2011 by CBS News).

The last piece of the puzzle is that, with so much emphasis on politics in the city, the topic of technology in DC tends to get buried underneath debates about legislation.  People are only now realizing the potential for technology startups in DC.   With images of bursting tech bubbles still fresh in their minds, savvy entrepreneurs see greener pastures in the less competitive regions surrounding the Potomac.

In a few years, we will know for certain whether these tech startups have had any effect on entrepreneurship in DC, but for now, the city is basking in its new found popularity among the tech industry.

Even if things go sour, we should at least be able get our president to use something cooler than a blackberry.

We are excited because this “travel experience” is not just another routine stop. Instead of showing hundreds of tourists what Vegas has to offer, we will showcase what OnBoard Tours has to offer 11 a.m.-7 p.m. February 28, 2012 at The Vegas Vendor Showcase presented by The National Concierge Association and The Southern Nevada Hotel Association.

The Vegas Vendor Showcase will begin its first year tomorrow at Cili Restaurant and Bar, and it was a no brainer when they reached out to us about this amazing vendor opportunity. The event developed from The NCA Nevada Chapter and SNHA’s vision to provide unlimited networking opportunities to its members and promote the interest of their hotels, resort properties, and community awareness.

The fact that OnBoard Tours can share their services to hospitality industry professionals is great, but that is not the primary motivation behind our involvement. All proceeds will go to the NCA and SNHCA who are both committed in the continuing education and support of the concierge profession.

At Onboard Tours, we continue to look for ways to grow our company and support others. Tomorrow’s stop has some great things in store, and there is more to come from one of the highest-rated tour companies in America!

Since 2001, FeedingNYC has provided meals to thousands of families all across New York. November 2011 marks its 10th year of hand delivering door-to-door Thanksgiving boxes; the boxes include food such as turkey, stuffing, vegetables and dessert. The birth of FeedingNYC in 2001 has resulted in more than 20,000 families being fed.

This year FeedingNYC will take place on Tuesday November 22nd at Chelsea Piers, and more than 300 volunteers join the cause to fight hunger. FeedingNYC’s mission is to connect people who want to help their neighbors in need, and OnBoard Tours is honored to partner with them this year. From 6 am- 12 pm, an OnBoard Tours shuttle will be used to take volunteers to the homes of families receiving food.

FeedingNYC is a perfect example of what working together as a community can achieve.

The same shuttles that have been used to take tourists all over the city will help transport volunteers and food. FeedingNYC is a perfect example of what working together as a community can achieve. There is an immense amount of love and effort that goes into organizing the operation, and the generosity of volunteers, sponsors and donators makes the event possible each year.
